PLANNING IN HEALTH PROMOTION WORK

Community development, planning and partnerships have become important terms in health promotion, but, up until now, debate around these concepts has happened more in planning science than in public health literature. Roar Amdam draws on theories and new empirical evidence from local, regional and international planning and public health in order to develop a new model for health promotion: empowerment planning.

Much health promotion planning has focused on top-down approaches, and, while efforts to be participative are made, it is often without having a clear understanding of how community empowerment can be accommodated within health promotion programmes. Amdam’s innovative concept combines top-down and bottom-up approaches to enable people to take more responsibility for their own health and for individual and collective capacity building.

Planning in Health Promotion Workis suitable for all students and researchers of health promotion and health planning and development,  and the numerous applied examples make it an invaluable resource for policy-makers and practitioners working in public health.

Public Health in History : Understanding Public Health Series

This book integrates history into that relentless onslaught of health information and the concern about health statistics or health policy. We provide context for the here and now, and analysis of change over time. We examine the factors involved in making change happen, the alternative models, the roles of individuals, of social movements and of scientific theories in the process.

In this book, we examine the practical uses of history, something considered in detail in thefi nal chapter of the book as well as in each topic chapter. But please bear in mind that all health issues and responses have their history, which may well have current significance both nationally and internationally.

In this book, ‘public health’ covers not just conventional historical meanings of the term, such as the nineteenth-century advances in water and sanitation or the early twentieth-century enthusiasm for health education and education for mothers. It also addresses health systems and service development, the rise of health professions and the role of gender in health and medicine. We also focus on a number of case studies– particular diseases or sets of activities (e.g. drug use) that have come to be seen within a public health framework in recent times.

Research for Universal Health Coverage-World Health Report 2013

Overview
Universal health coverage ensures everyone has access to the health services they need without suffering financial hardship as a result. In December 2012, a UN resolution was passed encouraging governments to move towards providing universal access to affordable and quality health care services. As countries move towards it, common challenges are emerging -- challenges to which research can help provide answers.

The World health report: research for universal health coverage focuses on the importance of research in advancing progress towards universal health coverage. In addition, it identifies the benefits of increased investment in health research by low- and middle-income countries using case studies from around the world, and proposes ways to further strengthen this type of research.
